There was a memorable scene in the movie The pursuit of Happiness, where Chris Gardner (Will Smith) - an unemployed, broke, homeless, single parent with a son to raise; one day saw a Ferrari F40 parked along the street, he then quickly ran up to the driver and asked, "What do you do, and how do you do it?"

"I am a stock broker," driver replied.

Even though its a movie, Chris' attitude made a deep impression on me - A person who has lost all of his processions once meaningful to his life (house, car, wife, salary, friendships, bank accounts), yet is still able maintain a courage and ambition to dream big. If he had not had the courage to ask those two crucial questions (questions which changed his life), he would not have known that the driver was a stock broker, and thus would have not determined to become one himself. He later became very successful at it and founded his own brokerage company that made him a millionaire.

Chris Gardner never thought of himself as being 'poor,' thus not allowing his circumstances to deter him away from being rich and think rich. - Rich is a mindset.

At the valley of his life, he did not see himself at despair, instead he is always motivated (with the desire to bring happiness to his son) to look for opportunities to climb back up to the peak. It was determination and courage which rewarded him happiness.

Psychology of "本來無一物"

"An experiment was done by a group of psychologists -Two strangers were invited into a room, 100 dollar cash was placed on the table. Person A was give the authority to split the 100 dollars with person B in however way person A desires (ie 50/50 ; 60/40; 80/20; 40/60, etc) , while Person B was given the authority to reject person A's offer at any point he desires, but when this happens neither person A or B will get any money at all.

The result was interesting: It was the point when person A proposed 80/20 split with person B, that person B decides to call off the deal, thus both of them walked away empty handed. This is because person B has reached a threshold where he simply could not get over seeing person A getting a better end of the deal, and would rather see both of them walk away from free money.

The psychologists took this experiment to a third world country, where 100 dollars is worth several months of average person's income. Two strangers were invited to participate, and the same result was found: There was one point where Person B would rather give up his own free 20 dollars (worth 1 month of his average salary) and let both walk away empty handed, than seeing person A getting free 80 dollars - a better end of the deal. " - Eben Pagan

Most of us are easily seduced and trapped by the values present in front of us, thus forgetting to hold on to what is truly meaningful to us in a bigger perspective.

Learn to love the shorter end of the deal...this is scarcity thinking - the fundamental principle of marketing, and surprisingly, is also the principle of Buddhism -

True Wealth

"There is a big difference between Money and Wealth. Wealth is having the knowledge, system, and asset to understand how to create value for others. While money is simply paper that pretend to have some arbitrary value." - Eben Pagan

Success is fulfillment, for self and helping others to fulfill.

What is interesting is that the billion and millionaires, such as Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, Paul Otellini, Jet Li, (the ones who can afford pretty much anything they wish) all expressed the fact that there is nothing more fulfilling than being able to help others to succeed and fulfill others needs than spending money buying mansions, cars, and other exotics for themselves. The act of helping others gives them the inner fulfillment that often endure a lot longer than the material fulfillment that they could easily achieve for themselves, as material fulfillment often didn't last long - cars will one day broke down, mansions will be sold. What is more permanent is the fulfillment of the minds, seeing their ability to make more significant impact by giving others who desperate in need of those material fulfillment than themselves do.

The most powerful and influential people throughout our history are commemorated not because how much they earned, but how much they acted, how much they influenced others, and how much they give back to society.

Rich Mind

"Rich is a state of mind. If you are rich on the inside, then you can go create money. If you are not rich on the inside, even if you get rich one day, you will find ways to get rid of it" - John Reeves

There was a memorable scene in the movie The pursuit of Happiness, where Chris Gardner (Will Smith) - an unemployed, broke, homeless, single parent with a son to raise; one day saw a red Ferrari 308 GTSi Quattrovalvole parked along the street, he quickly ran up to the driver and asked, "What do you do, and how do you do it?"

"I am a stock broker," driver replied.

Even though its a movie, Chris' attitude made a deep impression on me - A person who has lost all of his processions once meaningful to his life (house, car, wife, salary, friendships, bank accounts), yet is still able maintain a courage and ambition to look further and dream bigger than ordinary individuals. If he had not had the courage to ask the driver those two crucial questions (questions which turned his life around), he would not have known that the driver was a stock broker, and thus would not have determine to become a broker himself.

It was bold determination and courage which rewarded him happiness.

Language: learn the language, and incorporate them into everyday speaking.

Communication: besides using words, practice communication through nonverbal, body language.

Marketing, PR: direct-response, train to communicate complete message/story to stranger

Sales: consultative sale over simple persuasive direct sell. start by asking questions to learn client's problem, see if you could offer them something useful, or if your product fit, then sell solution specific fixing their solution. The best seller would actually understand what client needs, and openly admit their product can't solve, but will refer someone else that could actually solve their problems...this builds trust and professionalism, learn to walk away and let opportunity finds its way.

Public speaking: rejection triggers pain, fear of potential rejection by audience. Learn it through practice public speaking.

Business of Magazine

"Getting information first is one of the biggest luxury of all" - Tyler Brule, founder of Wallpaper* Magazine

In the age of exploded media and internetships, ability to acquire, process, and present info has already become the second greatest asset, first being our mind (which is partially shaped by info we acquired, but not totally,

Notes:

Monocle: 7000 copies printed per issue worldwide per day, 90,000 copies sold in the first year.

Journalistic over graphics like its predecessor Wallpaper*

The accessibility, the content, the medium of delivery (platform), the speed, efficiency, and portability.

platform being the most important, it decides how and what the info would be perceived by the audience.

Funding: from private equity firms, family investments, media corp, bank, readers, focus is on choosing one who understands the concept of the platform.

Understand what people want via market research, observation, survey.....costly and time consuming.

Where would it be read? on the road, plane, to work,

editorial budget: to finance the writers visiting and writing stories on the road.

Advertisers: bringing the platform and concept to the advertisement agency for approval to receive permission to publish products. Attracted not only to stats (ie # of copies sold annually) but also the perspectives ahead (ie expansion, content management, types of photos), as they wish magazines to be their primary advertising agency.

Distribution: Global - reduces risks of selling, wider audience may attract more global advertisers rather than only relying on a handful.

The abundance of web media drives further need for physical print. Print will become a precious scholarly luxury in the future.

Editorial consulting service...concept development of magazine comes from the desire to tell a strong narrative for each issue, with stories centering around the main idea...knowing what makes a good story, response to marketplace, find your target audience.

Marketing's power concerns how the product can be effectively distributed to the potential customers, or you could say is a storytelling or narrative that helps public to understand your idea.

Pyramid Scheme: illegal, works somewhat like franchise, but does not actually sell anything.

Multi-level marketing or Network marketing: a business distribution model that use means of direct selling and relationship referrals such as "words of mouth" (involving the parent company of product, the distributors, and downline distributors, to sell)...similar to a franchise model.
Incentives (compensation, promotion, commission) motivates the distributors to sell or find more downline distributors, thus spreading the products.

direct selling: sell to customer via person
direct marketing: sell via mail, email, infomercial
downline,

Free-line: Products cheaply produced and can be give away to establish better customer relationships.

Depth-line: The products reserve for the best customers who wish to know you more.

Choose freedom over security, it means business of managing risks over avoiding risks.

Cashflow

Notes:

Difference between four quadrants is emotion, choose quadrants based on personal belief and what is important.

Money is important, but don't spend your whole life working for it, let money work for you. Generate more free time to do other things more meaningful, such as time taking care of health, family, and friends.

Who you have to be, not what you have to do?

It doesn't take money to make money, nor a formal education.
Takes dream, determination, quick learning, and pick a quadrant.

how we choose to respond to emotions (of fear) : either security or freedom

4 cashflow quadrants:

Employee: need for security, receive salary, safe secure high paid job with good employee benefit.

Self employed: self employed type - owns the job and works for himself, do everything by himself (hard work and extreme effort) and works for duties responsible by many others in a business, be their own boss, or do their own things, private practice, receive salary for themselves, independent when comes to money, do it on their own and work hard, need for independence and freedom is more important than money, hardcore professionist....earn from commissions (artists, broker, freelance)

Business owner: own the business system and hire independent professionals to manage, don't have to work in business you own, while still be active in other quadrants like E, I.....looking for someone to run the company. "Why do it yourself when you could hire others to do it for you, better" - Henry Ford. Ownership and Leadership, bring out the best in everybody. Learn to work with elite people. Focus on the system of business (how departments run) not the product (burger).

Investment: money generate more money, is my cashflow from internal rate of return or net rate of return? Income generated without working for it, and still receive tax benefit columns.
Diversification: play to not lose. Focus: play to win. Instead of learning to avoid risk, learn to take and manage risk.

Wealth: "Number of days you survive without working and still maintain a same standard of living. Asset pays over your expenses." - Buckminster Fuller

security / financial security
freedom: business owner (people work for you), investor (money work for you) both are different skills. Education over ego.

Hamburger talk

"How many people can cook a better hamburger and food than McDonalds? I bet you can, and almost everyone else can. But how come McDonalds makes a lot more money than you do?" - Robert Kiyosaki.

There are so many people in this world with extraordinary talents but are still poor because they focus on cooking a better hamburger yet know little or nothing about business of marketing and selling.

The reason why schools don't teach us how to make money is because schools could not differentiate the fundamental difference between a profession versus a business. Ray Kroc, McDonald's founder separates between profession and business: his profession is about selling (hamburgers) this is what he works for on daily basis and get paid by the hours, yet his business is the accumulation of income producing real estate (asset), where his true wealth amasses without himself being at work. Most of us focus only on the income from our profession because this is what our school teaches (ie get a good education then find a stable high pay job in a good company, this causes you to depend on you salary to live, to work for money and play safe with your money rather than to let money work for you). School teach you to invest in your profession, but not in your business (income producing asset). It is business that can give you long term financial freedom, while profession will only provide you with financial security...as long as you are still working and not retired...but how long can you work for, your whole life? This is why investment in income-generating asset is important. The earlier you start, the better. But its never too late.

There are valuable skills which you will learn from working in professions, these are necessary building-blocks to assist you in constructing a business and help you make a leap, such as understanding of leadership, communication, production, networking, and public relations. The purpose of profession is to learn necessary skills, while helping you to accumulate capital to pay to start up a business. In summary profession is essential in learning the skill set and knowledge about the process (business models), while help you earn enough asset to make a transition towards business building.
The next step is always more significant than the one you just took.

Life's Lesson

"Life is the best teacher of all. Most of the time, life does not talk to you, it just sort of pushes you around. Each push is life saying - Wake Up! There is Something I Want You to Learn.

Life pushes all of us around, some give up, others fight. Those who welcome life pushing them around want to learn something from each moment in life and move on, "

"Laziness does not make one healthy nor wealthy."

"Passion is combination of love and courage, fueled by anger and discontent."

"Self inflicted fear, ignorance, and desire/greed (which rises from emotions) is what keeps people working for money, but not letting money work for them." R. Kiyosaki

Life's lesson

Summary of principles:

What is money? money is something everyone agrees on. Money can be any thing you want to be. If you can make something everyone agrees, then you can make money.

Know the difference between working for money and making money work for you, and Profession over Business. Work for money: profession, you work # of hr, and awarded $ per hr. Reality is: if you stop, $ does not come, and you can only work certain amount of hrs and being dependent on salary, rat race beings. Let money work for you: business, money comes even when you are not present, it works for you 24 hrs a day regardless of where you are what you are doing.

Asset: brings $ into your pocket.
Liability: takes $ out of your pocket.
Asset over liability, cashflow goes into asset first before going into expense. Must pay yourself first (regular contribution to asset) when the cheque is received, bills last, and use your intelligence not emotion to cut down expense, while make additional money to cover the bills.
Asset: Stock, mutual fund, real estate, GIS, bond, royalties, patents.... which will later help you to develop your own business. Liability: Mortgage, loans, debt, car payment, expense, anything out of your pocket. Your liability is someone's asset, your asset comes from someone's liability.

A house may be an asset or liability depending on the net income of the house. Ex: If the total month expense related to the income is less than the total income the house generate (ie via rent from tenant), then the net monthly income regarding the house is a surplus, thus the house is considered an (income generating) asset. If net income is deficit, then the house is a liability.
So always focus on asset, avoid liability.

True intelligence is knowing what is appropriate than what is right or wrong. Seeks balance, how much you should do, rather than being extreme and say either right or wrong right off the (emotional) bat....all about balance.

If you want something, you must first give.

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

"Life is the best teacher of all. Most of the time, life does not talk to you, it just sort of pushes you around. Each push is life saying - Wake Up! There is Something I Want You to Learn.
Life pushes all of us around, some give up, others fight, those who want to learn something and move on, they welcome life pushing them around."

"Laziness does not make one healthy nor wealthy."

"Passion is combination of love and courage, fueled by anger and discontent.

"Self inflicted fear, ignorance, and desire/greed (which naturally rises from emotions) is what keeps people working for money."

Fear of not having money, and once they do, they feel money will buy them everything....this becomes an endless cycle that traps people into working for money their entire life...being rich and earn high paychecks does not solve the problem, it only makes you more fearful of losing money (fear) and wanting to earn more (desire)...this is when you are working for money, your emotions are controlled by money, your life is controlled by money. Ignorance is when you stop learning and search knowledge of oneself, you are shut off from the rest of the world, your perspective becomes narrowed, your mind is closed. Ignorance is the cause of greed and fear

Use your emotions to think, not to think with emotions. Higher emotions tend to lower financial intelligence. Mortgage: paying for home they never own, property tax, don't always appreciate in value, mortgage draws money away from other opportunities to make money, lost of time where other could grow in value, loss of additional capitol for other investment chance, lost of education. Primary income should be through income producing asset, not just wage itself. concentrate on buying income generating asset, keep liabilities (such as house) down.

"The rich buy assets, the poor only have expenses, the middle class buy assets thinking they are liabilities." Middle class work for owners of company, the government through taxes, and finally the banks through mortgages...this is a financial struggle...working for someone entire life, life revolve around wage and income column...this a lifestyle that they are trapped and will never get out of debt.

Business: something that generates asset without you being there you own, but managed by others (or else would be a profession). Stocks, bond, mutual funds, income generating real estate, notes IOU, intellectual royalities, patents, etc that appreciates and have a ready market.

Difference between Profession and Business: Schools trains people to have professional skills to enter the workplace to work for money. ex: if you are a banker, bank would be your profession, not business. . If you own the bank, bank would be your business. Ray Krock, McDonald's founder separates between profession and business: his profession is selling hamburgers (income), yet his business is the accumation of income producing real estate (asset). Most of us focus only on the income from our profession (ie wage, seeking raise or higher pay, educate for raise, cling to job and play safe could not help them survive during crisis), but not the asset. So buy real asset.

Work to learn, not to make money...to seek what you will learn rather than what you will earn...look down the road to see what skills they want to acquire before choosing a specific profession before being trapped in a rat race. "You want to learn a little about a lot"
Leadership, selling

"How many people can cook a better hamburger than McDonalds? then how come McDonalds make more money than you do? So many talented people are poor because they focus on cooking a better hamburger and know little about business."

"best selling author, not best writing author."

manage of cash flow, time organization, people, selling, marketing, negotiating, communication
1. Need a strong reason/purpose greater than reality
2. Choose, power to choose is in you, every action every moment you need to choose...choosing to be rich requires certain spending habits you have to make. Choose to spend it foolishly and you will be poor. Choose to spend on liability and you will be a middle class, choose to spend on your mind and asset, then you will be wealthy. Learn & time are most important asset, what we do with our time?
3. Choose friend carefully, learn from all of them, what to do, what not to do.
4. master a formula of making money, then learn a new one.
5. Pay yourself first, power of self discipline, spend on asset, control desire and cut expense. Pay bill is the last, when run into difficulty paying bill, don't draw money from saving to pay for it, but use your intelligence to make more money. Mental fortitude.
6. pay broker well, pay professionals well (they educate you ,and give you better information, their service will earn you money, more they make, more you make.
7. Indian giver,
8. Buy luxury only from asset, not credit. Learn to make money, not work or borrow money to pay for luxury.
9. Need for hero, and naivety, follow them no to read and learn from them, their experience, negotiation, investment strategy.
10. If you want something, you first need to give. Be charitable and giving, both in money and education. If you want something, first give you what you want. When you in need of something or short of money, health, always give yours first, it will always come back. Be generosity which what you are, and the power of generosity will make them smarter. Principle of reciprocity. Poor is more greedy than wealth.

Job = just over broke..work then pay bill. Workers work hard enough to not get fired, while the owners pay just enough so the workers wont quit.

"Wealth is a person's ability to survive so many days forward." - Buckminster Fuller - fincancial survivability compared between asset (excluding wage) and expense. Asset is re-invested back into asset, while expense maintain low.

Living a life of fear and ignorance....
Dont react (dont let money control your emotion), think!
Dont work for money, let money work for you.

asset and liability, acquire only asset, not liability....use asset bring you cash, not money, money only accentuate your flow of cash.
Financial illiteracy: spend on liability than asset, do not know how to spend money wisely. Do more for less. An intelligent person hire people who are more intelligent than they are.
"more money does not solve problems, intelligence solve problems."

R. Kiyosaki

I don't run, I fight.

Priority: 1. be Rich, 2. be comfortable, 3. be secure.

Money can be any thing you want to be.

True intelligence is knowing what is appropriate than what is right or wrong. (seeks balance, how much you should do, rather than being extreme and say either right or wrong right off the (emotional) bat.

Design is as much logical as it is mental.

Affective design & business

Henrik Fisker - Chief in Design of Fords Motor, Aston Martin, BMW, and his own Fisker Coachbuilt.

"Passion. I remember, as a kid, riding in the back of my dad's old Saab 95 in Denmark. We were on the highway, and suddenly this silver Masertai Bora came upon us, then passed. At the time, to me, this car looked like a spaceship. I remember this tingly feeling I had, these goosebumps. That was it; that was the moment. I was into cars from then on."

"I have a certain way of designing, and I just won't shake that out of my system. I love pure sculpture, I like the right stance, large wheels sitting really well in the body; low-slung, sexy, beautiful, sculptural cars. I'm trying to create timeless designs that will last long. This is about creating a sense of style in this segment. This is not about quick hits....
When you see that car, something goes on in your stomach. It's so sexy, amazingly sexy. It almost doesn't matter how it drives."

"We want to be able to react to the market quickly; we have developed a way of designing and producing cars that allows us to go from idea and first sketch to market in about 18 months."

“You can be the richest person in the world, but without the love of family and friends, you would also be the poorest.” - W. Buffett

There need to be a conscious line between business and personal life, don't let what happened in business interfere with who you are off stage with family and friends. Its like defining a boundary between what you can and cannot (code of ethics) in a professional practice, always know where you are standing with each decisions made, so you never come close to crossing the line. When in doubt, step back, don't be seduced by greet and benefits right in front of your eyes, because in the long run, such actions will pay bigger consequence.

“It takes twenty years to build a reputation and five minutes to lose it. If you think about that, you will do things differently.” - W. Buffett

Ex: kitchen renovation case. Frequent delays from contractors, as they were shuffling multiple projects at once to make more cash without telling the clients , thus putting smaller clients in disadvantage because their projects were constantly being pushed back to devote more time for larger, more profitable clients (delaying deadlines, lied about production progress with poor excuses). A kitchen island that suppose to be completed in 3 weeks (given by the contractor) took more than 4 months.

The client: couldnt do anything because no contracts were signed to enforce the progress, only way is to denounce the contractors and threaten to withdraw the project.

Lesson learned: you get what you paid (its cheaper to hire a contractor without signing contracts however, you also dont get your protection at the same time. Contract or mutual agreement (acting as check and ballance) regarding schedule is necessary to enforce meeting deadlines, also place professional responsibility (pressure) on both side to get the work done.

Client side: never pay in full or over half before the project has completed. Pay in increments by what is completed, pay only deposites. If you pay in full before any has started, you've just handed the power to the other side, thus losing our right to negotiate in case something goes wrong.
Contractor side: Stick to your promise, at least show effort in recovery if deadline could not be met.

The day design becomes obsolete

I was at a Jeffrey Kipnis lecture half a year ago when he was speaking to a class of grad students at Sciarc. He started up the lecture by asking, "what is a window for?" Some brave students in the audience shouted confidently, "for viewing," "lets air and light in," "evaculate in case of fire," and "block outdoor sound." Now the interesting fact, if the same question was asked to a group of audience who do not have a formal education in design and architecture, would their answers be the same as grad students now in the audience who have been studying for over 4 years? I would think so too.

Design lacks necessity, this is fundamentally the reason why it does not have enough relevance that it should compare to other disciplines such as economy, science, even entertainment.
In design, almost every theoretical design position can be argued because the very foundation supporting the argument is built upon a system of perceptions (subjectivity), rather than facts, which makes it relatively easier to argue in comparison to other disciplines such as business or science, where solid quantitative data (statistics) are required to verify their interpolations in order for ideas to be validated. This results in over-saturation of design theories and projects being produced that can spread everywhere throughout the wide-spectrum, relevant and irrelevant, like viewing through a pool of videos on Youtube database (probably only 1 % out of millions out there is actually useful). The fact is designers do not build their work off of predecessors, nor share/exchange relevant information to other designers in the field as much compare to other industries such as medicine, psychology, physics, etc. This has to do with the profession's over-emphasis on individuality, believing that 'genuine' creativity could only come from an individual or a small elite group - thus preventing design from effectively progressing forward towards relevant ideas in consistent pace over time. This causes design to have less of its relevance. The fact that there is too much design ideas out there makes it impossible to validate every single one of them. As a result, the goal has become not to verify what we do is indeed correct or incorrect, rather, design has become a medium for individuals used to express their own self interests....there is a lot more leverage in design for interpretations that can be more personal.

Design need to break from its own bubble in order to expand and become more influential, more accessible, and less expensive to practice and execute.
design perceived as rich man's hobby, prostitution, thrive and expand only when the society reached the economy of abundance. The fact is, when people are struggling to earn the cash to pay for next meal, would they be worrying about how comfortable their chairs feel? what material their dinner table is made off? Design need to restablish a sense of urgency and necessity in order to provide a relevant service to society
Parametric design the future?

Knowledge is great, but action is a must.

Complementarity

Complementarity: an economic term describing when you put together skills / goods from different sources, they complement each other and produce good that is better than on its own. People who building a company are not typically great at running then because these are two totally different set of skills - entrepreneurship & management, which require both the founders and the ceo. Physicists and journalist also complement in theory; physicist does the research, and the journalist publish and sells it. -Steven Dubner

Win or lose don't matter as much when you know you are still living.
And knowing that you have lived is what really matters in Life.

Life through Straws

Our life consist of many beliefs. Imaging each belief that you cling on to represents a straw, what you see through this straw represents your view of this world. But in reality, the world we exist is as boundless as the sky, but unfortunately, you can only see a small portion of the sky through that straw. Thus what you believe in will actually narrow what you see. Now, the more beliefs you cling onto, the broader the picture of this world you might be able to see because you have more straws, right? However, when you try to see the sky with all these straws at hand, you can no longer get a clear view of this world, instead you see the edges of the straws more than the actual view, the edges represent boundaries exist between your beliefs that will ultimately obscure your vision of this world.

The question is, how do you get the broadest view of this world?

In response, Professor Salzberg, a well known spiritual practitioner, simply said to put down all the straws. "When we have the courage to put down the straw and view the sky as it is, vast and unimpeded, then we can recognize the varied perspectives each straw gives us. We can recognize the difference between our very favorite straw, our most accustomed straw, out exquisitely preserved straw, and the sky itself. If we hold the straw skillfully, we will be able to put it down sometimes and look nakedly at the sky."

The important thing is not to have as many straws as possible, this does not give us a better picture of the world, but instead we must recognize that the world is as vast as sky, each straw you cling to has its limitations, therefore, it is critical to step outside the straws and be self-critical of your beliefs. You can hold on to them, but always keep in mind that the world in reality is boundless like a sky, we must have the courage to question our own dearest beliefs from time to time in order to not be restricted by them. When we have the courage to question our beliefs, we will become more critical and open-minded, and thus giving us faith to embrace sudden changes and uncertainly in our life.

Have faith, be nice to everyone may sound simple, but only people who really understand and practice this concept will see its true value - this is EQ.

EQ IQ

Emotional Intelligence, like Intelligent Quotient, are not innate, but developed through our daily habits. If habits improve, it is definitely possible for both to improve as well. The key is to maintain compassion and mindfulness in every moment, as a personal discipline. Attitude, persistence clears obstacles.

Empty Cognizance

Empty cognizance reduces human suffering.

Cause of suffering:
Desire, discontent, believe in permanence

What to do?
believe in impermanence, detachment from non-existed, nothing exists, including your mind. Objects are perceived and experienced, but does not mean they actually exist. (can you point to where your mind is? Can you point to "space?" what you are pointing at is a wall, a ceiling, a floor, etc, "space" like "mind" is a concept based on our experience with a collection of many objects, like everything else, you cannot pinpoint to one and say this is definitely a "space" or "mind", objects are concepts formulated based on our experiences with many other objects which are also concepts, concepts are assumptions we take for granted, nothing actually exists.)

We conceptualize objects around us, but we never could pinpoint their existence....
Our knowledge is founded on basis of inductive reasoning (making hypothesis based on past experiences), hence knowledge are not facts, they are fallacies derived from our perceptual experience. Since our perceptions are deceptive, cant be trusted (subjective, varying depending on circumstances), its fair to say knowledge is not concrete, so is every objects around us that are conceptualized based on our knowledge. We cannot prove existence of objects, they are empty, despite we 'feel' their existence.

Believing that nothing exists might be too difficult to accept unless you are a Buddha, so here is a less extreme version for us to contemplate:

Suffering arouse from our attachment to objects around us, because nothing in this world is permanent, objects we own and hold onto dearly will eventually perish or die, causing suffering. So the more we attach to, the more we suffer as a result. The objects we are always in pursue of....does not stay permanently, we will one day disappoint ourselves, again, causing more suffering.

Empty cognizance can reduce suffering. We are aware of our experiences with objects around us, however just because we felt their existence does not mean we need to conceptualize the object and thinking that it actually exists (our perceptions of existence are based on induction, a fallacy). We know they are all empty and impermanent in reality, thus no need to conceptualize/being attached to the object, hence we will not suffer if we felt we have lost them.

We perceive the existence of our thoughts because we perceive the existence of the object which our thoughts contemplate on. But if we know that the objects actually do not exist, or not meant to last forever, then our thoughts will one day perish with the objects. So dont be attach too deeply to your thoughts, dont be attached to0 deeply to your objects, one day they come, one day they will go again. Get use to gaining and losing, one day you just may realize that losing is actually a gain. (Gain loss theory)

Architecture-therapy

There is such thing as music therapy, since architecture is close to music, does this mean architecture can also be considered a therapy? can it cure mentally ill, tap into the deeper emotional minds of its inhabitants during rehabilitation?

Arch-theraoy aims to mediate the suffering caused by our modern sickness, time-sickness, dependency on technology, haste, ignorance, unsatisfaction, privacy, that results in lack of happiness amongst people in society.

Good Architecture = Good Song

Architecture is a Song

Lyrics 詞 = Meaning, history, theory that puts the design into discussion by providing a narrative platform to express its support/denial of the context which it is discussed).

Tune 曲 = atmosphere, dictates the way in which the design is to be expressed according to the intended lyrics. Form, order, organization, tectonic expressions, material, color, pitch, rhythm, dynamics, texture, composition

A song with good tune does not require understanding of the lyrics of the song in order to enjoy it. Its purpose is to set the mood, not storytelling. Ex: Jay Chou's 周大俠, almost all of Jays songs dont require understanding of the lyrics, instead, its efforts lies in the complexity and layering of multiple tunes, he sings with tune in mind, rather than the content, this is what makes him so unique in contemporary culture. Other examples like Enya, which seem to express her voice as a musical instrument, a mechanism of expression, rather than as a storytelling medium.

However, classical songs 80's and before, often has to rely on the content of lyrics to captivate its audience, since the technology (sound mixers, garage band, etc) for making and editing tunes where not as sophisticated and diverse as it is now.

Combination of the two results in a great song; a great architecture, that when experienced, provides you with goosebumps.

UM + SCI-Arc = a great song.

saving money is an attitude
its not about counting and saving every single penny
its about knowing not to underestimate the opportunities which one dollar may bring
helping you spend at things thats worth more than its value.

有位老師說過 "right tool for the right tasks"

Atmosphere/sensation

From now on, Atmosphere should replace the word sensation. Atmosphere is beyond sensation. Sensation concerns the mood of space, object, time, perhaps more personal, describing one's feelings from within oneself, more subjective. While atmosphere is more objective, concerning the mood of the space/architecture/set rather than of oneself. It asks the question: what does this space offer (space to person)?, rather than how you feel in this space (person to space). Thus placing more focus on the spatial elements (materials, tectonics, color, lighting, and ways (pattern/organization systems) in which they are brought together) that combined to establish a particular atmosphere(s). Contemporary atmospheric spaces attempt to provoke five senses through employment of various techniques, although most stay mainly visual.

Atmosphere constructs sensations.

"In psychology, sensation is the first stage in the biochemical and neurologic events that begins with the impinging of a stimulus upon the receptor cells of a sensory organ, which then leads to perception, the mental state that is reflected in statements like "I see a uniformly blue wall." In other words, sensations are the first stages in the functioning of senses."

Economics of life

Life is not perfect.
You can’t satisfy everyone, can’t do everything, with good quality, because scarcity exists.
Everyday we are forced to make decisions as a result of limited resources (materials, and even notion of time) yet so many demands. Scarcity limit us to how much we can buy, consume, and spend. Thus we need to make choices, prefer doing one task or buy one thing over the other…ultimately constructing our economic behaviors, our economic way of life. Hence the key to better economic way of life is balance.

To help us make better decisions require understanding each choice’s benefits and consequences. Thus a better decision often gives the most benefits (satisfy more of your needs/desire, more incentives) with you spending the least amount of scarce resources (good quality at low price)…this thinking thus forms the basis of our economic life. Making better decision often require risks analysis, thinking further to evaluate whether the decision you make today will have positive return (ie. Bringing more benefits to you) in the future. A high risk choice will likely limit or narrow your beneficial decisions in the future.

One concept people often ignore is that with every decision you make in life has trade-offs (capitol loss). For instance, if you spend two hours overtime to fulfill your work task today, you ended up losing two hours family time with your children and wife, or friends. So no matter how what choice you made, there is always something you cannot recover from. If everyone follows economic principles, lose is inevitable in all decisions made, the question is simply how much you lose.

Back to balance. To live in a economic life is to seek balance between trade-offs, between quantitative choices versus qualitative. However, as technology and (as a result of technology) secularism prospers…the world today exists in an imbalance between quantitative needs over the qualitative. This is evident in a major social problems that we face today - “time-sickenss” (doing everything fast) as a result of hot-pursuit for efficiency. As an architect, one who believes in balance, the world we exist today is overly charged with quantitative over qualitative aspect of living, the lack of so called the mind nourishment. The subject of qualitative properties is rarely discussed especially in architecture because of its ambiguity/subjectivity. We often think that people feel better in one house than the other because of their own background, demographics, experience, etc, things that architects have no control or prediction of, However, ironically, as technology progresses, our understanding of human brain increases, we begin to unravel the truth about sensations and feelings. With MRI technology, we can now accurately pinpoint what causes particular emotion to occur in what part of our brain, thus realizing the fact that emotions can be triggered, or manufactured more consistently, something that is no longer purely random and subjective. Experiments involving exposing certain object to several people and understand their emotional reactions to each object, in attempt to rationalize what causes those emotions. But I am aware qualitative should remain subjective, or else it would not be considered qualitative anymore, thus unable to achieve the quantitative/qualitative balance that I am hoping to achieve initially. However, with new interdisciplinary¬¬ knowledge in neurology, neuroeconomics, I hope to understand human decisions through the emotional side of their brain, in better hope for an architecture that could tap deeper into the minds of the inhabitants, to make us slow down, embrace temporary randomness, to savor every moment of the unexpected (by offering surprising returns/experiences that is specific to site and time), as an attempt to strike a balance in this imbalanced over-quantitative economic way of life.

How to fabricate slowness sensation, how to manufacture mind provocations, not simply visual provocations?
How can architecture have deeper impact beyond its material/visual existence, to influence our sensual and mind experiences? How people understand there is something beyond simply what they see, what is that “something” which drives their experiences?

To the newly elected leaders of America

National (international) economy is the priority. If the government cannot feed its people and make them comfortable (making good money), then how do you expect to get people's support? So rescuing the economy and eliminate fear of recession, restore consumer confidence should be the top priority of the new government.

There are some ways to rescue the current economy from becoming a major recession:

1. Stop the war against Iraq and Afghanastan....before saving others, save your own people. If you cant manage your own country's concern, then why should you mind other nation's business? how could they trust you?

2. Reduce budget deficit. Spend less than what you actually collect from federal taxes. Stop war will reduce military spendings...thus sparing more money to spend on economic incentives, medical insurance, social security, and most importantly - education. Remember, this recession may take many years to recover, and a majority of the baby boomers population are retiring over the next decades, so training for the next generation to take over is critical in terms of the nation's economy in the long run, the country's prosperity depend on the future generations, they must be secured.

3. Reduce national dept, how? I don't know, cut deficit spending first.Or else future generations will have to repay this irresponsible debt.

4. Secure our foreign policy with Japan and China, one of the biggest US bond owners in the world. If they withdraw the bonds, the economy will collapse. So smile and be friendly, at least convince them that US is still worth investing in the long run. This may also means to balance the trade deficit between US and China.

To AVM

Do I know it exists? Yes, it finds me.
Do I know how it feels? Yes, suffering, unhappy, fear.
Do I know what causes it? Yes, the object, the reality.
Do I know how it will affect me? Yes, agitation, temptation, fear.
Do I care? Yes, compassion for self and others.
Will this disturb my mind? No, its empty, comes and goes.
Will this constraint my actions? No, I live in peace and co-existence.

What is Thought.

Our thoughts exist, because thoughts are tied to an objects which exist. Therefore, we could say that thoughts are the objects, thoughts exist because the objects that cause/arose this thought exist. Thoughts cannot exist without the objects, so the thoughts are the objects themselves, the objects are the thoughts. And since objects do not exist (its empty, immaterial) therefore, we shall not "dwell on the Nonconditioned [non-existed]."

Meaning one should recognize the thoughts of the objects, but should not limit his/her actions to something (condition of the object) which does not ultimately exists. Be mindful of everything, but take control of your actions, not be mis-guided by non existed objects/thoughts, they are empty and impermanent, and there is no purpose to pursue or be agitated by them.

Original excerpt:

" Thought is like the flame of a lamp, and it proceeds through causes and conditions.

where there is an object, there thought arises. If the object were one thing, and the thought another, then there would be a double state of thought. So the object itself is just thought.

Thought proceeds, without any staying power, like a monkey or like the wind. It ranges far, bodiless, easily changing, agitated by the objects of sense, with the six sense-fields for its sphere, connected with one thing after another.

What does it mean, "not dwelling on the Nonconditioned"? The bodhisattva contemplates the reality of Emptiness but does not take Emptiness as an object of attainment.

The bodhisattva practices the reality of Nonappearance and Nonpursuit but does not take Nonappearance or Nonpursuit as an object of attainment....

He meditates on Suffering but does not reject the world of births and deaths.

He meditates on Detachment but goes on realizing good things in the world.

He meditates on Nonaction but continues always his acts oof service and education.

He meditates compassion but does not abandon Great Compassion.

Practicing in the way, the bodhisattva is described as "not dwelling on the Nonconditioned."

He has wisdom but does not end his action in the realm of the conditioned...he wants to realize his great Vow but he will not abandon the conditioned world. "

Excerpts from
Nhat Hanh - "The Miracle of Mindfulness" 1987, p. 135-138

One shall bridging the gap between the current "conditioned world" and the ultimate reality.

One shall see how empty and impermanent the conditioned world (object, thoughts) is in compare to reality. However, one shall not as a result, ignore the object and thoughts, instead, should always be mindful of their impermanence deep inside their minds.

In Honor of Ray Kappe

"I was once asked what I think
are the ten most important principles
that helped make me a successful
architect, planner, and educator...

(1) Think positively, not negatively.
(2) Accept structure but know that
it is to be questioned and broken
when necessary.
(3) Always be willing to explore,
experiment and invent. Do not
accept the status quo.
(4) Know yourself and keep your
work consistent with who you are
and how you think.
(5) Maintain good moral and social
values.
(6) Be humble, honest, compassionate,
and egalitarian.
(7) Have conviction about your work.
(8) Be open and say yes to most
ideas and requests. The good ones
will be valuable, the bad ones will
cease to exist.
(9) Allow employees and fellow
workers freedom and the ability
to work to their strengths. Avoid
hierarchy.
(10) Money should be the residual
of work, not the goal. But do not
compromise your worth."

"Naivety is the first step towards great accomplishments" - p/x

Opportunities ahead

Undoubtedly US is still the most powerful economic nation in the world, judging by the magnitude of effects that its recent financial crisis had (still has) on the world economy. There is reason why US dollar is the most widely used currency in global market, all the most precious resources, such as gold and oil (maybe fresh water?) are quantified according to USD. This is why if US market collapse, every market around the world will also plunge.

The crisis is deep, but not unrecoverable, given some time, the market will gradually recover. Foreign investments are still pouring into the US at this time when the prices (real estates, stocks, etc) are at their record lows. "There is already a two year lineup to purchase multi-million dollar penthouses above Manhattan skyline" a reliable source says (mostly European and Chinese investors). Everyone around the world seem to have faith that its just a matter of time before the US will recover....so a relief for the investors who have saved some spare change over the past years waiting for this perfect moment to enter the market...be prepared to make some $$ over the next 3 decades.

Remember, investment is a gamble, if you don't know what you are doing, you should diversify your funds and aim for long term return. The goal is always to invest in good business with durable long term competitive advantage and is currently offered at a bargain price due to consumer inconfidence.

How Spectacular is Wii?

Nintendo Wii is a contemporary spectacle in the realm of video game industry. Why? its simple, the invention of the wifi controller revolutionizes the way in which video games are traditionally played. We no longer sit passively on our couch with both hands on a controller to play the game, instead, we have the freedom to act like how the role players in the game will act, you are part of the game, you literally acting as the player that you are playing. It is considered a great spectacle because the interactions between the player and the games is "live"; when you swing controller on your right hand, the tennis player in the game does a right swing. Your movement is replicated by the role player which you control in the game.

Wii blurs the boundary between the players of the game (us) and the roles in which we play in the game, thus making the game more engaging. Great spectacles often engages the audience and the performers as one, making the audience feel they are all part of a great performance on stage.

To create a spectacular architecture relies on breaking the boundary/interface between the inhabitants and the event, how to engage the inhabitants with their surrounding environments, so they too become the participants of the events taking place within architecture. The notion of event (sometimes known as program) goes back to Archigram's imaginary cities, Tschumi's Manhattan transcript, and Koolhaas' Delirius New York. Together, they form the fundamental basis in which we understood architecture as an event generator, not only as an habitat to be inhabited. The difference between the generator and habitat is that there is uncertainty lie within the generator. It is this uncertainty which creates the spectacle unpredictably spectacular.....

The affect of Neuroecomics on manufacturing Sensations

Neuroeconomics is an interdisciplinary study bridging between economics, neuroscience, and psychology. It attempts to understand how one makes economics/monetary related decisions (economic behaviors) via studies on our brain activities when we do so. It is an attempt at quantifying the qualitative...it is possible to measure the feelings of the human heart.

Experiment done by MIT professor Drazen Perlec illustrated that our perception and sensation are partly constructive rather than intutive, how we feel and value an object is very much depend on prior influences (marketing, brand, previous experiences forming perception). Using three case studies, Prelec illustrates how “neuroeconomics picks up some of these violations of rationality, trying to understand where in the brain we can get a deep understanding of what’s going on.” In a notable instance, subjects sipped different wines (through a straw) in the fMRI, and were asked to rate them. They were told they were drinking wine that ranged in price from $5 to $90. The “dirty trick was the $5 and $45 wines were the same, as were the $10 and $90 wines.” Not surprisingly, “ratings were massively influenced by price,” so the $90 wine was considered exceptional.

What was surprising, says Prelec, was that “the brain lies also.” An area behind the forehead, the medial prefrontal cortex, which is associated with the perception of value, burst into more activity when the subject experienced the “$90” wine than with the exact same “$10” wine. It seems as if the very idea of quality, or value -- often a marketing ploy -- makes a product like wine more enjoyable.

In the future, social behavior will be generated based on how "affective" you are capable of producing a particular sensation (a mechanism to behavioral motivation) that can manipulate one's decision.

Lose or Gain Theory

Every loss has a potential to become a gain given the right attitude and patience. So it is up to you to decide whether it be a loss or gain for you.

Few steps towards turning loss into a gain:

1. Hardship is like a long dark tunnel, the only way out is to go through it.

2. Release your emotions, then learn to control it. Be rational, but not cold blooded - care about others who truly care about you (your family and friends!)

3. Have the courage to face reality, admit there are things in life you have to face, they are there for you to accommodate and learn from, readjust your objectives if necessary, but never give up your faith and moral.

4. Channel your grief into motivation for learning.
Knowledge is the best investment you will make regardless of your age, social status, in any given difficult situations. The more you learn, the broader the perspectives you will gain, and the more chance you will overcome adversity. Being a smart thinker is about being flexible, knowing there are many options for you to choose allows you to make the one that is most advantageous to you in the long term. This is why the more diverse of knowledge you gain, the more opportunities you will discover lying ahead of you than ever before. For instance, who said you can’t combine architecture with business management, entrepreneurship, sociology, religion, neuroeconomy, investing, etc. Innovation comes from recombining across disciplines. Don’t be selfish thinking that only architects/designers can solve architecture/design issues, and that architecture can solve all issues beyond architecture. We need more from others than they need us; we need them to help us break through our boundaries.

5. Learn from the past, learn from others who been through this, learn from books, from web, learn something you never learned before, build up your curiosity towards others you never cared about.
Acquire more knowledge will strengthen your ability to cope with adversity. The qualitative and quantitative returns from investing in your knowledge will help build your material and spiritual wealth in the long run.

6. Learn to look ahead of yourself because there is nothing you could change about the past. So think where you could be in 2, 10, 30 years from now, and walk towards it. Time will not stop for you when you are suffering, so flow with it. Don’t waste what you have accomplished before - You have come all the way up to this point, so there is no reasons to believe you can’t make it to the next.

7. Don’t lose your dream because of your grief of loss, or sympathy of others, because you will only lose, not gain.

8. Optimism helps, but don’t think that by sitting there, everything will turn out to be good later. Optimism will only be effective if you act at the same time, meaning - do something! Some/ a lot of effort is required to reverse the table from loss to a gain. Don’t just thinking optimistically, act with optimism and faith.

9. Look into an infant’s eyes, watch them grow, and you will realize how incredibly intelligent their learning abilities accumulate and adapt, and how incredibly stupid and clumsy the way we (the adults) learn. We are all selfish, trying to defend rather than to embrace and adapt...(learn from tai chi)

10. Courage brings hope, hope brings happiness. Everything you do requires courage, courage, together with faith and knowledge - will help you endure adversity by giving you more options to avoid dead ends, while assisting you to make the most beneficial (lower risk) choices that is best for you in the long run.

11. You do realize you have a plenty of time to learn, grow, experience. Life is a long marathon; losing at this moment does not mean you cannot do better in the long run. Look ahead with courage, faith, and knowledge, and someday, you may just become the one and only - the best.

All these points mentioned above came from my experience with adversity that I am currently still fighting, not from Dr. Phil,….except maybe #1

If you need help, reach me at hsiehyp@hotmail.com, I'll do my best.

Hero

There's a hero if you look inside your heart
You don't have to be afraid of what you are.
There's an answer if you reach into your soul
and the sorrow that you know will melt away

And then a hero comes along
with the strength to carry on
and you cast your fears aside
and you know you can survive.

So, when you feel like hope is gone
look inside you and be strong
and you'll finally see the truth
that a hero lies in you.

It's a long road when you face the world alone;
No one reaches out a hand for you to hold.
You can find love if you search within your self
and the emptiness you felt will disappear.

And then a hero comes along
with the strength to carry on
and you cast your fears aside
and you know you can survive.

So, when you feel like hope is gone
look inside you and be strong
and you'll finally see the truth
that a hero lies in you.

Lord knows dreams are hard to follow,
But don't let anyone tear them away.
Just Hold on, there will be tomorrow,
In time you'll find the way

And then a hero comes along
with the strength to carry on
and you cast your fears aside
and you know you can survive.

So, when you feel like hope is gone
look inside you and be strong
and you'll finally see the truth
that a hero lies in.....you.

How Spectacular

Design is a mechanism for spectacle, like architecture, it provides a stage for an everyday event to unfold, while depicting an ordinary moment of the story to magnify. End result is a creation of a spectacular atmosphere where original perception of the ordinary moment becomes spectacular and extraordinary.

Spectacular design work hand in hand with seductive medium - media, branding, economy, technology, science, psychology, with goals to inject some excitement to the banal environment, while appeal to the deepest human desire for provocation, differences, and change.

How bold
how seductive
how exuberant
how complex
how unpredictable
how big
how surprising
how interactive

dictates

how spectacular a design becomes.

The World still needs our Left Brain

Left brain thinking is important.

It deals with
it helps you to make critical analysis and judgment based on logic and reasoning (objective, quantitative) which are detached from your initial emotions.

Emotions are normally temporal, hence making decisions based on emotions dont always work in the long run. Architecture are built to last a considerable periods of time, so you better not make your decisions purely on emotions, or else buildings will lose intentions and meanings with its selfish tempo.

Experiences are not accumulation of emotions (it can be, but not always). It is more of the accumulation of your knowledge and encounterance with similar situations repeatedly through life. So when someone (ie architects) are making decisions based on experience, this does not mean they are making them based on their emotions at those moments (like artists probably do). They are indeed practicing through reasoning, to make the best choices, to strike the balance between all criteria needed to be fulfilled.

Creativity does not always come from emotions, and being logical and reasonable does not take away creativity and emotions. Logics help you channel your emotions, creativity towards the right (the positive, less risky, more optimistic direction) direction . Logics give you directions and instructions to which you should further explore in order to establish yourself outside the box.

Combining strategic thinking with your creativity not only help you to clearly define your goals and expectations with efficiency, but also help you to understand and analyse what others did before, what you are doing now, and how will your actions define what is coming next.

Freedom or Lost

Freedom comes when you have full control of situations, when you know your limits and parameters, when you know your risk level (ie of losing a project or exceeding budget) and when you know when to accelerate and hold back.....this helps to establish the zone in which your creativity could be put to best use. Laying out what is know, and from there, you start to question what is yet known or done.

However, freedom does not come when there are no control or limitations to what you do, because this would only hold you back from being creative in a useful and effective way, while increase your chance of failure and risk. Not knowing your limitations and expectations will give you 'lostness', not freedom.

Slow Space Part II

Slow is the new fast

Slowing down or being ‘unplugged’ does not mean abandoning all technologies that have offered us comfort, or eloping from our cities to live in the countryside. Be slow means to be able to control your own pace, learn when to go fast, when to be slow, and when to be in between. Sometimes taking power naps between long working hours is more beneficial to productivity; it clears your mind, so you come back more sharp and focused. Other times its best to go for a walk than sitting at your desk in order to be inspired to solve complex issues. Quite often our most creative and thoughtful ideas submerge while we are in the shower, half asleep, or even staring out the window and do nothing. Slowing down allows our body to establish intimate relationships to our minds, allowing us to think deeper below the surface rather than reaching for quick but shallow solutions. This may help us to enjoy the process more by establishing meaningful connections with what we do, and thus improving quality of our lives. We need more Slow Space in our urban environment to provide us the opportunities to slow down - something that our ‘wired’ homes failed to do.

Polarizing

Slow Space Part I

“Life is about exploring the world, and our reactions to it, at our own speed." - Carl Honore*

In an era of information super-highway, where notions of speed and productivity dominates how we value the way we live and work, we have forgotten the pivotal role of our home as a refuge for us to rest and slow down.

Rapid expansion of Global Capitalism and technological advancements over decades has forced us to accelerate almost every aspect of our lives.
Satellites, Cell phones, computers, internet, microwaves, electronic gadgets, automobiles, television, etc - all have convinced us to work faster, talk faster, eat faster, travel faster, shop faster, and play faster. Our hurry lifestyle consequently has a detrimental effect on the traditional role of our home. Home has lost its value as a place that could offer tranquility; instead it has utterly become an extension of our workplace adapting to our hurried lifestyle.

Technology were initially invented to provide convenience and free ourselves from work, but ironically, two centuries after the first Industrial Revolution began, we now work longer hours than ever before just to catch up with ever-rising expectations of our modern society. Even at home, we standby 24/7 answering business calls, checking emails and fax sent from clients overseas, net meeting with colleagues over the internet, and making tasteless microwave food just to spare more time for work after meal. Even if we do receive empty time, we rather spend it on watching televisions, chatting on msn with friends, and browsing through friend’s YouTube or Facebook profiles, than spending quality time to slow ourselves down. Our ‘wired’ homes could no longer provide ourselves the opportunities to feel ‘unplugged’.

Polarizing

This world uses too much left brain

This world uses too much left brain…..

All numbers, logical, rational, economical,

Attempt to do everything right, but ultimately what for? To get to the next faster, but always trapped in the endless cycle of speed, everything keeps on coming when you go faster…so set your own goals to beat….knowing when is enough, when you can enjoy, don’t get trapped in cycle of speed, and don’t get used by others

In the end, what matters most is what you enjoyed, not what you have rushed through

The world lacks feelings, intellect, psychological nourishment, poetics, connection to mind and body.

Material culture, no materials will last till the end but your feelings for others….quality, not quantity, as simple as that.

By Yuki

This world communicates too much

This world communicates too much

Too much talking results in distractions

Society consumes communication (one way), rather than attempting to understand (2 way loop with feedback).

We don’t always need to talk in order to proceed

Humans have brilliant individual minds to think powerfully critically imaginatively, given the right time, but when they are forced to communicate quickly to let others understand, they compromise their thoughts, generate more misunderstanding than understanding, complex thoughts (with emotions attached) becomes simplified (rationalized, simplified) in order to tell stories to others so they could understand…..interpreting boils down to talking…..personal becomes status quote, bibles, music notes are the most over-communicated mediums in contemporary, leaving no room for self interpretation/enlightenment. How to create something (a text) that can multiply in meaning specific to each individuals?

We should interpret more rather than talking more.

We need a better communication method than language, language sets barriers to understand our inner thoughts.

We are afraid our thoughts not being accepted by others, we lack our confidence and faith in believing our thoughts, that’s why we are forced to communicate,

But in return is Misunderstanding, everyone stereotypes, everyone wants to understand others, but in reality, they want others to understand themselves, forcing others into their own thoughts and labels.

Everything becomes others not yours, everything is perceived by society via consensus, not your own. We should not communicate too much.

Everyone compromise themselves (by being simple) in order to be understood by others,

Everyone looses ingenuity, complexity in order to communicate.

Too much communication, learn not to speed to others, listen to your own mind, your own body. Not being selfish, but being aware.

Wondering what the world would be like without communication, without language.

There was a period in the pre-historic where homo-sapiens did not speak a language, how did they know each other’s thoughts, did they need communications to live?

Plug your ears for an hour a day and listen, you will realize there is no such thing as ‘silence’, in fact, it is only “the absence of unintended sounds”* that are much richer and have yet to be explored.
