Ode to Joy ~

Mind, World / 心 世界

The world does not change,
what does change is your mind,
because the world is perceived through your mind
If the mind changes, so will the world
So if you can control your mind,
you can control your world.

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

In Honor of Ray Kappe

"I was once asked what I think
are the ten most important principles
that helped make me a successful
architect, planner, and educator...

(1) Think positively, not negatively.
(2) Accept structure but know that
it is to be questioned and broken
when necessary.
(3) Always be willing to explore,
experiment and invent. Do not
accept the status quo.
(4) Know yourself and keep your
work consistent with who you are
and how you think.
(5) Maintain good moral and social
values.
(6) Be humble, honest, compassionate,
and egalitarian.
(7) Have conviction about your work.
(8) Be open and say yes to most
ideas and requests. The good ones
will be valuable, the bad ones will
cease to exist.
(9) Allow employees and fellow
workers freedom and the ability
to work to their strengths. Avoid
hierarchy.
(10) Money should be the residual
of work, not the goal. But do not
compromise your worth."

"Naivety is the first step towards great accomplishments" - p/x

Opportunities ahead

Undoubtedly US is still the most powerful economic nation in the world, judging by the magnitude of effects that its recent financial crisis had (still has) on the world economy. There is reason why US dollar is the most widely used currency in global market, all the most precious resources, such as gold and oil (maybe fresh water?) are quantified according to USD. This is why if US market collapse, every market around the world will also plunge.

The crisis is deep, but not unrecoverable, given some time, the market will gradually recover. Foreign investments are still pouring into the US at this time when the prices (real estates, stocks, etc) are at their record lows. "There is already a two year lineup to purchase multi-million dollar penthouses above Manhattan skyline" a reliable source says (mostly European and Chinese investors). Everyone around the world seem to have faith that its just a matter of time before the US will recover....so a relief for the investors who have saved some spare change over the past years waiting for this perfect moment to enter the market...be prepared to make some $$ over the next 3 decades.

Remember, investment is a gamble, if you don't know what you are doing, you should diversify your funds and aim for long term return. The goal is always to invest in good business with durable long term competitive advantage and is currently offered at a bargain price due to consumer inconfidence.

There is nothing to loose...
everyone is empty to begin with.

How Spectacular is Wii?

Nintendo Wii is a contemporary spectacle in the realm of video game industry. Why? its simple, the invention of the wifi controller revolutionizes the way in which video games are traditionally played. We no longer sit passively on our couch with both hands on a controller to play the game, instead, we have the freedom to act like how the role players in the game will act, you are part of the game, you literally acting as the player that you are playing. It is considered a great spectacle because the interactions between the player and the games is "live"; when you swing controller on your right hand, the tennis player in the game does a right swing. Your movement is replicated by the role player which you control in the game.

Wii blurs the boundary between the players of the game (us) and the roles in which we play in the game, thus making the game more engaging. Great spectacles often engages the audience and the performers as one, making the audience feel they are all part of a great performance on stage.

To create a spectacular architecture relies on breaking the boundary/interface between the inhabitants and the event, how to engage the inhabitants with their surrounding environments, so they too become the participants of the events taking place within architecture. The notion of event (sometimes known as program) goes back to Archigram's imaginary cities, Tschumi's Manhattan transcript, and Koolhaas' Delirius New York. Together, they form the fundamental basis in which we understood architecture as an event generator, not only as an habitat to be inhabited. The difference between the generator and habitat is that there is uncertainty lie within the generator. It is this uncertainty which creates the spectacle unpredictably spectacular.....

The affect of Neuroecomics on manufacturing Sensations

Neuroeconomics is an interdisciplinary study bridging between economics, neuroscience, and psychology. It attempts to understand how one makes economics/monetary related decisions (economic behaviors) via studies on our brain activities when we do so. It is an attempt at quantifying the qualitative...it is possible to measure the feelings of the human heart.

Experiment done by MIT professor Drazen Perlec illustrated that our perception and sensation are partly constructive rather than intutive, how we feel and value an object is very much depend on prior influences (marketing, brand, previous experiences forming perception). Using three case studies, Prelec illustrates how “neuroeconomics picks up some of these violations of rationality, trying to understand where in the brain we can get a deep understanding of what’s going on.” In a notable instance, subjects sipped different wines (through a straw) in the fMRI, and were asked to rate them. They were told they were drinking wine that ranged in price from $5 to $90. The “dirty trick was the $5 and $45 wines were the same, as were the $10 and $90 wines.” Not surprisingly, “ratings were massively influenced by price,” so the $90 wine was considered exceptional.

What was surprising, says Prelec, was that “the brain lies also.” An area behind the forehead, the medial prefrontal cortex, which is associated with the perception of value, burst into more activity when the subject experienced the “$90” wine than with the exact same “$10” wine. It seems as if the very idea of quality, or value -- often a marketing ploy -- makes a product like wine more enjoyable.

In the future, social behavior will be generated based on how "affective" you are capable of producing a particular sensation (a mechanism to behavioral motivation) that can manipulate one's decision.

Lose or Gain Theory

Every loss has a potential to become a gain given the right attitude and patience. So it is up to you to decide whether it be a loss or gain for you.

Few steps towards turning loss into a gain:

1. Hardship is like a long dark tunnel, the only way out is to go through it.

2. Release your emotions, then learn to control it. Be rational, but not cold blooded - care about others who truly care about you (your family and friends!)

3. Have the courage to face reality, admit there are things in life you have to face, they are there for you to accommodate and learn from, readjust your objectives if necessary, but never give up your faith and moral.

4. Channel your grief into motivation for learning.
Knowledge is the best investment you will make regardless of your age, social status, in any given difficult situations. The more you learn, the broader the perspectives you will gain, and the more chance you will overcome adversity. Being a smart thinker is about being flexible, knowing there are many options for you to choose allows you to make the one that is most advantageous to you in the long term. This is why the more diverse of knowledge you gain, the more opportunities you will discover lying ahead of you than ever before. For instance, who said you can’t combine architecture with business management, entrepreneurship, sociology, religion, neuroeconomy, investing, etc. Innovation comes from recombining across disciplines. Don’t be selfish thinking that only architects/designers can solve architecture/design issues, and that architecture can solve all issues beyond architecture. We need more from others than they need us; we need them to help us break through our boundaries.

5. Learn from the past, learn from others who been through this, learn from books, from web, learn something you never learned before, build up your curiosity towards others you never cared about.
Acquire more knowledge will strengthen your ability to cope with adversity. The qualitative and quantitative returns from investing in your knowledge will help build your material and spiritual wealth in the long run.

6. Learn to look ahead of yourself because there is nothing you could change about the past. So think where you could be in 2, 10, 30 years from now, and walk towards it. Time will not stop for you when you are suffering, so flow with it. Don’t waste what you have accomplished before - You have come all the way up to this point, so there is no reasons to believe you can’t make it to the next.

7. Don’t lose your dream because of your grief of loss, or sympathy of others, because you will only lose, not gain.

8. Optimism helps, but don’t think that by sitting there, everything will turn out to be good later. Optimism will only be effective if you act at the same time, meaning - do something! Some/ a lot of effort is required to reverse the table from loss to a gain. Don’t just thinking optimistically, act with optimism and faith.

9. Look into an infant’s eyes, watch them grow, and you will realize how incredibly intelligent their learning abilities accumulate and adapt, and how incredibly stupid and clumsy the way we (the adults) learn. We are all selfish, trying to defend rather than to embrace and adapt...(learn from tai chi)

10. Courage brings hope, hope brings happiness. Everything you do requires courage, courage, together with faith and knowledge - will help you endure adversity by giving you more options to avoid dead ends, while assisting you to make the most beneficial (lower risk) choices that is best for you in the long run.

11. You do realize you have a plenty of time to learn, grow, experience. Life is a long marathon; losing at this moment does not mean you cannot do better in the long run. Look ahead with courage, faith, and knowledge, and someday, you may just become the one and only - the best.

All these points mentioned above came from my experience with adversity that I am currently still fighting, not from Dr. Phil,….except maybe #1

If you need help, reach me at hsiehyp@hotmail.com, I'll do my best.

Hero

There's a hero if you look inside your heart
You don't have to be afraid of what you are.
There's an answer if you reach into your soul
and the sorrow that you know will melt away

And then a hero comes along
with the strength to carry on
and you cast your fears aside
and you know you can survive.

So, when you feel like hope is gone
look inside you and be strong
and you'll finally see the truth
that a hero lies in you.

It's a long road when you face the world alone;
No one reaches out a hand for you to hold.
You can find love if you search within your self
and the emptiness you felt will disappear.

And then a hero comes along
with the strength to carry on
and you cast your fears aside
and you know you can survive.

So, when you feel like hope is gone
look inside you and be strong
and you'll finally see the truth
that a hero lies in you.

Lord knows dreams are hard to follow,
But don't let anyone tear them away.
Just Hold on, there will be tomorrow,
In time you'll find the way

And then a hero comes along
with the strength to carry on
and you cast your fears aside
and you know you can survive.

So, when you feel like hope is gone
look inside you and be strong
and you'll finally see the truth
that a hero lies in.....you.

How Spectacular

Design is a mechanism for spectacle, like architecture, it provides a stage for an everyday event to unfold, while depicting an ordinary moment of the story to magnify. End result is a creation of a spectacular atmosphere where original perception of the ordinary moment becomes spectacular and extraordinary.

Spectacular design work hand in hand with seductive medium - media, branding, economy, technology, science, psychology, with goals to inject some excitement to the banal environment, while appeal to the deepest human desire for provocation, differences, and change.

How bold
how seductive
how exuberant
how complex
how unpredictable
how big
how surprising
how interactive

dictates

how spectacular a design becomes.

The World still needs our Left Brain

Left brain thinking is important.

It deals with
it helps you to make critical analysis and judgment based on logic and reasoning (objective, quantitative) which are detached from your initial emotions.

Emotions are normally temporal, hence making decisions based on emotions dont always work in the long run. Architecture are built to last a considerable periods of time, so you better not make your decisions purely on emotions, or else buildings will lose intentions and meanings with its selfish tempo.

Experiences are not accumulation of emotions (it can be, but not always). It is more of the accumulation of your knowledge and encounterance with similar situations repeatedly through life. So when someone (ie architects) are making decisions based on experience, this does not mean they are making them based on their emotions at those moments (like artists probably do). They are indeed practicing through reasoning, to make the best choices, to strike the balance between all criteria needed to be fulfilled.

Creativity does not always come from emotions, and being logical and reasonable does not take away creativity and emotions. Logics help you channel your emotions, creativity towards the right (the positive, less risky, more optimistic direction) direction . Logics give you directions and instructions to which you should further explore in order to establish yourself outside the box.

Combining strategic thinking with your creativity not only help you to clearly define your goals and expectations with efficiency, but also help you to understand and analyse what others did before, what you are doing now, and how will your actions define what is coming next.

Freedom or Lost

Freedom comes when you have full control of situations, when you know your limits and parameters, when you know your risk level (ie of losing a project or exceeding budget) and when you know when to accelerate and hold back.....this helps to establish the zone in which your creativity could be put to best use. Laying out what is know, and from there, you start to question what is yet known or done.

However, freedom does not come when there are no control or limitations to what you do, because this would only hold you back from being creative in a useful and effective way, while increase your chance of failure and risk. Not knowing your limitations and expectations will give you 'lostness', not freedom.
